2019 - Launches to Orbit and Beyond

Listed are launches, irrespective of outcome, that were irretrievably committed to flight towards orbit or intended to accelerate the payload to escape velocity. The following notes should help with understanding the launch lists.

Launch times are in UTC and are either from the launching agency or estimated by 'walking back' along the ground track to the launch site. Most orbit data and decay information comes from SpaceTrack. The Space-Track data occasionally contains inconsistencies (eg - incorrect re-entry dates or early sets of elements allocated to the wrong object) that need to be corrected from other sources.

To fill the gaps where elements are not formally published, usually because they have a classification of "Secret", some orbits are based on amateur observations. Such data is published near-daily by Mike McCants, and the source observations can often be found in the web-based Seesat-L discussion group. Occasionally, orbits are estimated by myself from public data.

Space-Track occasionally fails to allocate names to objects in its catalogue. In these cases, the names are derived from public information.

Apogee and perigee are measured against a spherical Earth with a radius of 6378.145 km assumedto be situated at the focus of the orbital ellipse. The value for the orbital period is the Anomalistic Period, or time to complete one circuit of the ellipse. It is not the same as the time taken to complete one circuit of the Earth. Care should be exercised when comparing Orbital Focus data with other published orbits because they may have been derived using a different model.

Users can go straight to specific launches by pointing to the page URL followed by the three digit launch number, eg - https://www.OrbitalFocus/Diaries/Launches/Launches.php?year=2019#001

3U Cubesat built as a demonstrator for a “multifunctional” membrane panel about 1.5m square and deployed from a 1m mast . Thin-film devices attached throughout the membrane will demonstrate designs for low-mass array aerials and solar arrays. The structure acted as an air brake resulting in relatively-rapid orbit decay and a relatively-short orbit life compared with other satellites from the launch. Also carries an amateur radio payload.

Radar Earth imaging satellite aimed at sun-synchronous orbit with LTDN 06:00. Lost when the launch vehicle third stage malunctioned. Referred to as Yaogan 33 in Chinese launch announcement in what may have been a bureaucratic error as the name was subsequently re-used in a later launch of a different design of satellite.

1.5U Cubesat in the Prometheus programme, launched as one of a pair. Prometheus Block 2 satellites act as a host for separately-produced payloads. This is one of two similar satellites on the same launch, carrying an unspecified payload for the US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) to demonstrate satellites working together. May actually be a 3U Cubesat with the hosted SOCOM equipment carried in a 1.5U compartment.

Carrying supplies and equipment to ISS. Precise launch time 16:05:05 UTC. Separated from launch vehicle at 16:20:07 UTC. Captured with ISS RMS Sep 28 at 11:13 UTC and docked with the downward-facing port of the ISS Harmony module at 15:08 UTC. Postponed from Sep 10 after a fire broke out on the launch pad. Undocked from Harmony Nov 1 at 1345 UTC by ISS RMS under ground control. Released into independent orbit at 17:21 UTC. Final retro-fire Nov 3 at 01:41 led to destructive re-entry at about 02:09 UTC. Any surviving fragments impacted the southern Pacific Ocean some 4500 km east of New Zealand at around 02:30 UTC.

Northrop Grumman spacecraft - launched to rendezvous and attach itself to the Intelsat 901 GEO comsat (28624/2001-024A) then take over its pointing and station-keeping functions in order to extend its on-orbit life by five years. May then move to another satellite. Precise launch time 10:17:56 UTC. Released from the launch vehicle Oct 10 at 02:11 UTC into super-synchronous orbit then pushed towards Intelsat rendezvous by onboard electric thruster system, arriving 2020 Jan 31. Intelsat 901 had departed its station at 27°.5 east 2019 Dec 11 and moved to GEO graveyard orbit. MEV-1 then docked with Intelsat 901 on 2020 Feb 25 at 07:15 UTC so all subsequent listed orbits are for the combined objects. Arrived at Intelsat 901 new location of 27°.5 west 2020 Mar 29.

Northrop Grumman vehicle carrying supplies to ISS under CRS-2 contract with NASA. Precise launch time 13:59:47 UTC at the beginning of approximately five minute window. Separated from launch vehicle 14:07:36 UTC. Arrived ISS Nov 4 and captured by ISS RMS at 09:10 UTC under control of crew. Docked with downward-facing port of Unity module using RMS under control of ground-based engineers at 11:21 UTC. Undocked 2020 Jan 31 then released from RMS at 13:36 UTC the same day. Whilst in post-undocking free flight, Cygnus released a number of Cubesats and hosted a payload for the US company, Lynk, for experimentation in using space based-mobile phone cells. Planned re-entry 2020 Mar 2 was delayed in order to extend the Lynk tests. Retro fire Mar 17 around 23:00 UTC led to re-entry above the southern Pacific Ocean around 23:40 UTC.

First test mission of Boeing-built spacecraft to be used for ferrying crew and cargo to/from ISS, no crew carried on this mission. On separation from launch vehicle, Starliner received sufficient thrust to enter very low orbit but software problem prevented major thruster firing and caused it to use up propellant on unnecessary attitude control, leaving insufficient for ISS rendezvous. Retro-fire Dec 22 at 12:01 UTC led to touchdown 12:58 UTC at White Sands Space Harbor, New Mexico, USA.
