2015 - Launches to Orbit and Beyond

Listed are launches, irrespective of outcome, that were irretrievably committed to flight towards orbit or intended to accelerate the payload to escape velocity. The following notes should help with understanding the launch lists.

Launch times are in UTC and are from the launching agency or estimated by 'walking back' along the ground track to the launch site. Most orbit data and decay information comes from SpaceTrack but it occasionally contains inconsistencies (eg - incorrect re-entry dates or early sets of elements allocated to the wrong object) that need to be corrected from other sources.

To fill the gaps where elements are not formally published, usually because they have a classification of "Secret", some orbits are based on amateur observations using visual and radio techniques. Such data is published near-daily by Mike McCants, and the source observations along with observers' derived orbits can often be found in the web-based Seesat-L discussion group. Occasionally, early orbit data are published by satellite owners. In extreme cases, orbits are estimated from public data.

Space-Track occasionally fails to allocate names to objects in its catalogue. The SATNOGS online database of radio observations sometimes provides pointers to which Catalogue Number belongs to a satellite being tracked by its contributors.

Apogee and perigee are measured against a spherical Earth situated at the focus of the orbital ellipse and with a radius of 6378.145 km. Shown is the Anomalistic Period, or time to complete one circuit of the ellipse. It is not the same as the time taken to complete one circuit of the Earth. Care should be exercised when comparing with other published orbits because they may have been derived using a different model.

Users can go straight to specific launches by pointing to the page URL followed by the three digit launch number, eg - https://www.OrbitalFocus/Diaries/Launches/Launches.php?year=2015#001

Carrying a cargo to the ISS under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contract. Its cargo included three Cubesats for later release from the ISS - AESP 14 and the Nanoracks CM5' cluster two Flock 1D' satellites. Launch attempt Jan 6 called off because of a technical issue with the Falcon first stage's thrust vector control system. Captured by ISS Remote Manipulator System Jan 12 at 10:54 UTC, docked with lower port of the Harmony node at 13:56 UTC - retaining bolts were driven home 3-4 minutes later. Undocked from Harmony Feb 10 at 17:11 UTC and released into independent orbit at 19:10 UTC. Retro-fire at 23:49 UTC led to splashdown in Pacific Ocean off California Feb 11 at 00:44 UTC ±1 min.

Supplies to ISS. Precise launch time 11:00:17 UTC. Intended to dock with the Pirs module at 13:07 UTC. The mission was lost when Progress was damaged by a small explosion in the launch vehicle upper stage caused it to shut down early and deliver Progress to a lower orbit than intended. Although communications were functioning, rapid tumbling of the spacecraft after separating from the launch vehicle meant it could not be controlled. According to TsUP, it re-entered May 8 at 02:04 UTC and was destroyed by frictional heating.

Military imaging reconnaissance satellite, sometimes referred to as 'Yantar', with manoeuvring engine to maintain its orbit. It released two containers of exposed film at different times during the mission for retro-fire and recovery with landings 2015 Jul 7 at around 09:35 UTC and Aug 7 at around 04:45 UTC. The main module landed in the Orenburg region of Russia 2015 Sep 17 at around 22:15 UTC. Spacetrack's re-entry date of Sep 18 is incorrect - it may refer to an uncatalogued piece of debris (eg solar panel) discarded in orbit before retro-fire.

Life 3 days
Small Russian military satellite equipped with optical and microwave sensors to monitor naval activity on and below the ocean surface. Carried on second test flight of Soyuz 2-1v. Lost when it remained attached to Volga rocket stage. Volga de-orbit manoeuvre (Dec 6 around 03:30 UTC) resulted in low perigee rather than re-entry because of extra mass during thruster firing. Separated from the Volga Dec 7, probably as a result of heating and buffetting in the upper atmosphere around perigee. Re-entered Dec 8 at 05:43 UTC southbound on the Greenwich meridian near 35° south, above the south Atlantic Ocean.
