Soyuz Radio Transmission Frequencies

Soyuz has used a number of radio frequencies over the years and the Soyuz radio systems have evolved along with the spacecraft. The early reliance of HF (shortwave) transmissions was replaced by upgraded and more-sophisticated systems using higher frequencies.

tracking Soyuz
This table contains frequencies used throughout the years by Soyuz and its non-recoverable derivative, Progress. It starts with from the testing phase in in the 1960s and use as a space station ferry to Salyut and Mir. It goes right through to the current Soyuz-TMA amd Progress M-M versions serving the ISS. While docked with the International Space Station, Soyuz is available as a 'lifeboat' in case of emergency and Progress is used occasionally for orbit adjustment.

There is no immediate sign of either Soyuz or Progress being replaced so there should be plenty of signals to track over the next few years. An ultimate replacement is likely to move to higher frequency bands and digitised transmission of voice, at which point some of the fun of tracking will disappear.
