GLONASS - Soviet-Russian MEO navigation system

Nottinghamshire, UK
2026 Sep 17
Thursday, Day 260

Curated by:

Soviet spacewatching from the very start
The table lists all launches by the Soviet Union and Russia in its Global Navigation Satellite System.

It was fourteen years between the first launch and the constellation first reaching its full complement of 24 satellites. Early launches used the Proton launch vehicle to orbit 2-3 satellites at a time but once the constellation was complete, the strategy changed to single satellites on a Soyuz rocket in order to replace individual satellites or introduce new versions.

Not all satellites reached orbit in operable condition. Some of them are obvious in that they did not adjust their orbits to the standard 675.7 minutes period.

The Cosmos numbers and used in this list are as catalogued by Space-Track and may differ slightly from the actual Soviet/Russian identifiers.

Experimental navigation satellite. GLONASS-K is a new design and has a planned life of ten years. One of the major advancements is that it is unpressurised, leading to a reduction in the mass, allowing a single satellite to be Soyuz launched. GLONASS-K also carries radio receiving equipment for the COSPAS-SARSAT international search and rescue system.

GLONASS-M navigation satellite to replace one of the trio lost in the launch failure of 2010 Dec 5. Launch delayed from Aug 25 (22:50 UTC) due to the Aug 24 Soyuz launcher mishap. Further delayed from Sep 25 for technical reasons, then delayed 24 hrs from Oct 1 by high winds at 7-10 km altitude near the launch site. Its arrival on orbit made the GLONASS constellation complete for the first time since 1996.
