2013 - Launches to Orbit and Beyond

Listed are launches, irrespective of outcome, that were irretrievably committed to flight towards orbit or intended to accelerate the payload to escape velocity. The following notes should help with understanding the launch lists.

Launch times are in UTC and are from the launching agency or estimated by 'walking back' along the ground track to the launch site. Most orbit data and decay information comes from SpaceTrack but it occasionally contains inconsistencies (eg - incorrect re-entry dates or early sets of elements allocated to the wrong object) that need to be corrected from other sources.

To fill the gaps where elements are not formally published, usually because they have a classification of "Secret", some orbits are based on amateur observations using visual and radio techniques. Such data is published near-daily by Mike McCants, and the source observations along with observers' derived orbits can often be found in the web-based Seesat-L discussion group. Occasionally, early orbit data are published by satellite owners. In extreme cases, orbits are estimated from public data.

Space-Track occasionally fails to allocate names to objects in its catalogue. The SATNOGS online database of radio observations sometimes provides pointers to which Catalogue Number belongs to a satellite being tracked by its contributors.

Apogee and perigee are measured against a spherical Earth situated at the focus of the orbital ellipse and with a radius of 6378.145 km. Shown is the Anomalistic Period, or time to complete one circuit of the ellipse. It is not the same as the time taken to complete one circuit of the Earth. Care should be exercised when comparing with other published orbits because they may have been derived using a different model.

Users can go straight to specific launches by pointing to the page URL followed by the three digit launch number, eg - https://www.OrbitalFocus/Diaries/Launches/Launches.php?year=2013#001

Supplies to ISS, Precise launch time - 10:12:06 UTC. One of the Kurs rendezvous system aerials failed to unfold as planned, reducing the effectiveness of the Kurs rendezvous system. Soft dock occurred 12:25:29 UTC after a fully automatic approach. The docking probe was then retracted slowly because the exact position of the jammed aerial was not know. Hard dock occurred at 12:34 UTC. Hooks and latches were then closed. Undocked 2011 June 11 at 13:58 UTC for one week of Radar-Progress experiments. Retro-fire June 19 at 13:52 was followed by re-entry with any surviving fragments impacting the southern Pacific Ocean north east of New Zealand at about 14:40 UTC.

Demonstration and test flight of Cygnus advanced maneuvering spacecraft that will be used for cargo delivery services under a NASA Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) agreement. An initial approach to the ISS Sep 22 was called off due to a software glitch - Cygnus passed about 5 km from the station. A second approach was inititated late Sep 28 UTC and, following a series of demonstration rendezvous manoeuvres, it was captured by the Remote Manipulator arm September 29 at 11:00 UTC. At 12:44 UTC it was attached to the Harmony node with all retaing bolts driven home about 30 min later. Undocked from ISS 2013 Oct 22 at 10:00 UTC and released by the manipulator arm at 11:31 UTC. Following retro-fire Oct Oct 23 at 17:41 UTC, it re-entered the Earth's atmosphere N of New Zealand at 18:16 UTC. Any unburnt fragments impacted the Pacific Ocean NE of New Zealand 10-20 minutes later.

in space
Satellite from Cornell University. The original plan involved a joined pair of near-identical small satellites that would have separated in orbit and conducted experiments in satellite inspection and measurement of station-keeping. One of the pair was irreparably damaged in 2012 during vibration testing so a single satellite is performing a modified mission. The second satellite was carried into orbit in order to maintain the integrity of the payload stack and provide a support for the active satellite. It was never activated itself and remains attached to the Falcon 9 upper stage.

in space
Indian demonstration vehicle to develop the technologies required for design, planning, management and operations of an interplanetary mission. Objective at Mars is to look for signs that life might have existed there and to research how Mars might have lost its liquid water. Launch was to Earth orbit, Separated from the launch vehicle at 09:52 UTC. Mars Orbiter is using its own propulsion system to raise its orbit, with engine firings Nov 6 at 19:47 UTC (416 seconds), Nov 7 at 20:48 UTC (570s), Nov 8 at 20:43 UTC (707s), Nov 10 at 20:36 UTC (cut short due to a computer error driven by a sensor or software problem). A firing Nov 11 at 23:30 UTC was used to compensate. There was a further firing on Nov 15 at 19:57 UTC (243.5s). After four circuits of the Earth, Mars Orbiter injected itself into a Sun-centred Mars transfer orbit 2013 November 30 at 19:19 UTC when thrusters were fired for 1328.89 sec to provide Δv 647.96 m/s. Entered orbit aroun Mars 2014 Sep 24 at 02:24 UTC following a 24 minute, firing of thrusters (Δv 1099 m/s). Designed to operate around Mars for 6-8 months. Communication lost 2022 September after eight years.
