2010 - Launches to Orbit and Beyond

Listed are launches, irrespective of outcome, that were irretrievably committed to flight towards orbit or intended to accelerate the payload to escape velocity. The following notes should help with understanding the launch lists.

Launch times are in UTC and are from the launching agency or estimated by 'walking back' along the ground track to the launch site. Most orbit data and decay information comes from SpaceTrack but it occasionally contains inconsistencies (eg - incorrect re-entry dates or early sets of elements allocated to the wrong object) that need to be corrected from other sources.

To fill the gaps where elements are not formally published, usually because they have a classification of "Secret", some orbits are based on amateur observations using visual and radio techniques. Such data is published near-daily by Mike McCants, and the source observations along with observers' derived orbits can often be found in the web-based Seesat-L discussion group. Occasionally, early orbit data are published by satellite owners. In extreme cases, orbits are estimated from public data.

Space-Track occasionally fails to allocate names to objects in its catalogue. The SATNOGS online database of radio observations sometimes provides pointers to which Catalogue Number belongs to a satellite being tracked by its contributors.

Apogee and perigee are measured against a spherical Earth situated at the focus of the orbital ellipse and with a radius of 6378.145 km. Shown is the Anomalistic Period, or time to complete one circuit of the ellipse. It is not the same as the time taken to complete one circuit of the Earth. Care should be exercised when comparing with other published orbits because they may have been derived using a different model.

Users can go straight to specific launches by pointing to the page URL followed by the three digit launch number, eg - https://www.OrbitalFocus/Diaries/Launches/Launches.php?year=2010#001

Undocking was May 10 at 11:15:31 UTC followed by several weeks of independent flight under the "Reflection" experiment to study reflective characteristics of the freighter's hull and the transparency of the Earth's atmosphere. Retrofire Jul 1 at 13:54:00 UTC led to destructive re-entry with any surviving fragments landing in the southern Pacific Ocean at 14:40:55 UTC near 38° 16' south latitude, 124° 08' west longitude.

Delayed from Mar 18 - pre-launch processing was affected by cold weather and resulted in a short delay. It brought mission timing into conflict with Soyuz TMA-18 so a longer postponement became necessary.

First flight of the USAF Boeing-built X-37B space plane fitted with a classified payload. Launched at the beginning of a 4 hr launch window. Landed Vandenberg runway 2010 Dec 3 with wheel stop at 09:16:02 UTC. Launch delayed from April 20. Originally planned for release from Space Shuttle, the X-37B was transferred to an Atlas V following orbiter Columbia's destruction in 2003. Orbital elements not released by Spacetrack so parameters are based on amateur observation.

Docked with the Pirs module May 1 at 18:30 UTC, five minutes earlier than planned and under manual control using TORU after a software error caused a problem in the automatic system when Progress was 1 km from the ISS. Undocked Oct 26 at 14:25 UTC and operated autonomously for the "Reflection" and "Radar Progress" experiments. Retro-fire Nov 15 at 08:49 UTC for 186.2 sec provided delta-V of 89.7 m/s led to destructive re-entry with any surviving debris falling in the southern Pacific Ocean at 09:35:39 UTC - location 47°.95 south, 139°.27 west.

in space
Venus atmospheric studies spacecraft also known as Planet-C and Venus Climate Orbiter. Precise time 21:58:22 UTC. It failed to enter orbit around Venus 2010 Dec. 6 when a communications error caused the main thruster not to ignite. A mid-course correction consisting of three thruster firings 2011 November re-targeted Venus and, 2015 on Dec 6 at 23:51 UTC, a 1233s thruster firing placed it in orbit around the planet. Near equatorial orbit of 400 x 440,000 km was higher than, and at different inclination to, the originally planned one because the approach path to Venus was different from the 2010 arrival.

Quasi Zenith Satellite System satellite to prove the concept of providing a timing and positioning service to improve navigational accuracy for users in Japan. Inclined, eccentric orbit with high period provides long 'stay time' above Japan, giving coverage to areas where the topography works against GPS reception. “Michibiki" translates into English as "Showing the Way". Launch delayed from Aug 2, reached operational orbit Sep 26.

Oct 6 at 03:06 UTC, it commenced retrofire and entered lunar orbit where it conducted several manoeuvres. 2011 Jun 9, it departed the Moon and was used to test China's deep space tracking network. It arrived at the Sun-Earth Lagrange 2 point Aug 28 and went into orbit around it. Around 2012 Jun 1 it departed to rendezvous with minor planet 4179 Toutatis 2012 Dec 13 from where it returned a number of images during a close (3 km) fly-by. It subsequently continued to follow its own orbit within the solar system.
