Yaogan - China's Reconsats

Tyneside, UK
2024 Mar 29
Friday, Day 89

Curated by:

The table lists all launches by China under the name Yaogan. They have used a range of different launch vehicles and have been launched from both Jiuquan and Taiyuan.

Yaogan seems to be a name to cover satellites having an imaging mission with a government or military purpose. Some seem to carry optical payloads and others carry radar. There are also some launches into orbits very like the US NOSS satellites. They probably have an ocean reconnaissance ELINT or SIGINT payload.

For the satellites in sun-synchronous orbit, looking at the orbit heights and inclinations together with the descending node local time gives an indication of related missions.

Imaging satellite (possibly carrying a synthetic aperture radar) for natural resources surveys and, possibly, intelligence gathering. Specific tasks include land survey, crop yield assessment, and input to disaster monitoring and prevention plans. Broke into eight fragments 2010 Feb 4, around 07:00 UTC as the result of a minor internal explosion probably due to equipment failure.

Remote sensing satellite described as undertaking land resources surveys and crop yield estimation. However, its purpose may be ocean surveillance similar to the US NOSS triplet formations that orbited at a similar altitude and inclination. The ground track lies 75° to the west of Yaogan 9 (2010-009A/36413) so it surveys a similar area about five hours later. Precise launch time - 04:06:04.

Imaging satellite carrying a synthetic aperture radar for natural resources surveys and, possibly, intelligence gathering. Specific tasks include land survey, crop yield assessment, and input to disaster monitoring and prevention plans. The orbit altitude and Descending Node time are similar to the initial values for Yaogan 6 (2009-021A/34839) suggesting the new satellite may be a replacement for it, or supplementary to it.

Radar Earth imaging satellite aimed at sun-synchronous orbit with LTDN 06:00. Lost when the launch vehicle third stage malunctioned. Referred to as Yaogan 33 in Chinese launch announcement in what may have been a bureaucratic error as the name was subsequently re-used in a later launch of a different design of satellite.

Remote sensing satellite described as used for electromagnetic environment surveys and other related technology tests. Orbiting in close formation with the other two satellites from the launch, its purpose may be signals or electronic intelligence gathering over the world's oceans, a similar task to the US NOSS triplet formations that orbited at a similar altitude and inclination. Formation was set up Feb 24 after one month of phasing manoeuvres.

One of a triplet of simultaneously-launched satellites described as being for "electromagnetic environment detection and related technological tests”. That may indicate they are electronic intelligence gathering satellites. They will use orbital manoeuvres to settle themselves at 120° spacing around the orbit plane.

Imaging satellite - orbit is similar to the Yaogan 31 electronic surveillance satellites, and the Initial orbit plane has RAAN about three degrees to the east of that of the third Yaogan 31 triplet (launch no 2021-014). Settled into formation with Yaogan 31 Group 3, sitting 34° of orbit arc behind it and following a near-identical ground track.

Chinese government or military remote sensing reconnaissance satellite. One of three similar satellites carried on the same launch vehicle and orbiting in formation. Launched into the same orbit plane as the three Yaogan 35-01 (launch 2021-101) satellites so may represent an enhancement of the constellation. 2023 March, this satellite ceased to manoeuvre and fell out of the operating formation.

Reported to be a remote sensing satellite monitoring the electromagnetic environment - a description that may indicate it has an electronic intelligence gathering rôle. One of three related satellites carried on the same launch. They will operate in a triangular formation separated from each other by about 120 km. - a similar formation to the lower inclination Yaogan 31 satellites.
